Originating in South-East Asia as 'Malay Apple', this bright red, pear-shaped fruit made its way to the Pacific Islands as a 'canoe plant' - plants that Wayfinders brought with them to explore this new ocean territory. In the 1700s, this plant which came to be known as 'Otaheite' (Tahitian) and 'Pommerac' (French), was brought to the Caribbean by European colonizers aiming to introduce more fruit to the region.
